1. How many times should I read each book? You should read each book at least once, however, if possible try to read the books more than once - you get so much more from the second reading. It is a good idea to identify pages that may be worthy of discussion. The facilitator of the discussion will have a list of all the characters and usually does a brief overview of the book at the beginning of the discussion to help those who may have read the book some months ago. 2. How are the discussions structured? Most groups are made up of around 15 people and the discussions last around 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours. There is a facilitator in each group who has some prepared questions to guide the discussion along. The facilitator will often start by asking participants what they thought of the book and from there questions are asked to get the discussion moving along. Some books generate lively discussions so the facilitator just keeps the participants on track. Participants are asked to keep to the book being discussed and not bring in critiques or articles from outside sources. The discussions are informal and friendly - participants/facilitators do not lecture on the book. All participants are encoured to get involved and express their views.
3. Must I be an expert on the book? No! The discussions are not based on a person giving a lecture on the book. Each participant reads the book and joins in on the discussion expressing ideas/opinions from their experience in reading the book. There is not just one "right" interpretation of the book.
4. Can anyone be a Facilitator? Yes! Anyone can be a facilitator. You do not need to be an expert on the book or the author. The only requirement is to read the book ( best to have read it twice) and organize some questions from your reading. You will be given some questions from the facilitator coordinator prior to the weekend - via email to help you with the discussion.
5. How do I Volunteer? The Society is always looking for volunteers. A slate of available positions is provided at the weekend and one can sign up at that time. If you think you can help before the weekend, email us using the contact link on the home page.
6. Do I have to stay on Campus? You don't have to stay on campus. There are many options to stay in Banff from Bed and Breakfasts, hostels and hotels/motels. We do however encourage people to stay on campus as the Banff Centre needs to have about 40 rooms booked for the event. the cost of the Banff Centre includes meals and the registration fee is less than for those staying off campus. There have been some recent changes to meal options at the Banff Centre so check details with the Banff Centre when booking a room.
